Here in Fair Haven we are in our winter hibernation mode.
Things really slow down in the winter. We have had plenty of snow already and the bay is already freezing over, which I am sure make all the ice fisherman happy.
Most of the businesses here are closed for the season, and, except for the Bayside Grocery, the ones that are open have limited hours.
Our cute little gift shop is open until after Christmas and has many nice things to choose from, I always can find something there, and love to help out our local economy. The grocery store is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Curious Moon is open for light lunches and coffee etc. Thursday through Sundays and also carries some gift items. The Pleasant Beach Hotel will be closing after New Year's Day and has limited hours. The Little Sodus Inn is open daily and remains open throughout the winter months. Fly By Night Cookie Co. is more or less closed for the winter, however she is taking holiday orders. The only restaurant open throughout the winter is Gillis's and it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and closes at 2 p.m. daily.
This year our little village has been going through some major changes.
One of the biggest beingthe public sewer project that has really torn the streets apart and there is road construction going on at the same time.I am sure when all is finished, things will get back together nicely. All the crews are done for the winter, and everything is covered by the snow.
The SOFA committee had another successful Fourth of July celebration this year and is already well ahead on the planning of the celebration. These guys donate so much of their time to this each year and it is good to know how much folks appreciate their efforts.
Also this year Fair Haven was lucky to have one of our own honored by being named Cayuga CountySenior Citizen of the Year.
Franklin “Buster” Lozierdoes so much for so many folks here as well as with his church family. I could go on and on about Buster but am limited to space.
Want something to do with the kids during Christmas break? Check out the Sterling Nature Center. It has programs going on all year. At 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, winter birds and bird feeders will be discussed.
One of the most popular winter wildlife activities in the United States is watching and feeding birds at a feeding station. This program will show people how to identify birds and ways to create simple feeders. Participants will create a peanut butter and seed feeder to take home with them. The program is free and open to the public.
At this time of the year my mind turns to all the soldiers, young and old, that are away from their families, helping to protect our country so we can enjoy all the freedoms we have.
I am saddened by all the lives lost and wish that there would be peace world wide so no one ever has to lose a loved one because of all this hatred. I feel bad not only for our own but for the many families worldwide that lose innocent loved ones the same as we do.
If you feel the same way I do about our soldiers and would like to show your support for them you could make a donation to Brooke Army Medical Center, Center for the Intrepid.
This is a Trauma Center for treating amputees and burn victims, most of whom were injured in Iraq.
Anyone looking for a way to say thank you to the brave men and women attending The CFI can do so by sending a Walmart gift card or a donation to BAMC Fisher House. These can be sent to Norma Guerra, Public Affairs Office, BAMC, 3851 Roger Brooke Dr. Bldg 3600, Fort Sam Houston TX 78234 - 6200. What a great Christmas gift to give.
Where would we be without our soldiers and veterans?
Wishing all of you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
