The holiday season is a time for traditions.
Every individual or family may have their own, but there are always those common threads: the wreath on the door, the stockings by the fireplace, and of course, the Christmas tree. A family tradition of ours has always been venturing through the woods to find that perfect tree to cut down.
If it's not exactly perfect, let it at least fit through the door.
Enjoying the sights and smells of the great outdoors in the home, is one of the most rewarding of all the holiday traditions.
While it may be the perfect time for giving, we must also keep in mind how these traditions are made possible.
All the paper and packaging in those gifts and even the tree itself are a gift of nature, and during a time of heightened generosity, why not give something back to the environment that made it all possible?
Every year Cayuga County holds a Trade-A-Tree program. When all the giving is done and it's time for that tree to come down, bring it in for recycling and in return you will receive a voucher for a free Balsam Fir transplant.
The tree(s) you bring in will be recycled into a nutrient rich mulch for use on trails and for other projects for everyone to enjoy.
It's fast, it's free, and that same mulch can even help your new Balsam Fir grow into a nice replacement for last year's tree.
This year's Trade-A-Tree event will be held at the Natural Resources Center on 7412 County House Road in Auburn near the County Nursing Home and the Sheriff's Building.
There is no need to call ahead for an appointment, just stop by on one of the following dates and times:
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 26-28, Jan. 2-4, 7-11 and 14-18
From 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 29 and Jan. 5
The Trade-A-Tree program is co-sponsored by the Cayuga County Solid Waste Management Program Office, Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County. For any questions about the program, feel free to call 252-4171.
