Anonymity online breeds lack of accountability

Thursday, December 20, 2007 10:26 AM EST

If people on the Internet were required to use their real names in e-mails and comments on websites, there would be an end to harassment, slander and lies. I know we have the technology to trace the e-mails; make it a law that people need to be truthfully identified.
Accept responsibility for what you say. Own it. Maybe then the nasty comments people feel so compelled to post anonymously would stop.

" Where is the original thread for these comments? This letter to the editor -- complains of email comments made in reference to which article? Thanks for any answers... "

" I think we've covered this more than once. Can't we all just make trouble with our fake names? Its so much easier. "

" A law that we have to use our real names? What kind of dictator are you? No. Anonymity is legal. It protects those targeted by the powers that be and those that serve them. Libel is what you are referring to. And putting names on emails will not prevent libel. Nasty people make nasty remarks. Anonyomously and/or f2f. It is tempting to make a nasty remark to you about your attempt to control other people. You want to many laws. "

" Many consider the political climate that we are in very dangerous to be posting without anonymity. I happen to be one of those people. Unpopular views can get you in trouble, and it has nothing to do with libel. (I believe Jacci meant to say "libel" when she said "slander"). It is truly unfortunate that we live in such a time, otherwise I might agree. "

" Jacci, I think you're right. Even my grandfather--Grandpa D, thinks so too! "

" The internet is an unregulated and anonymous source of communication. One should take care when traveling through. There are thieves, liars and cheats and you must take care of your business and privacy. That is the way it is. If you can't handle it then go somewhere else. It is the world wide web and you or any one nation cannot regulate it. "
