What did all of these Cayuga County residents have in common - Miles S. Irish, Lithgow Osborne, Lloyd S. Riford, Msgr. Wm. F. Cowen, A. Leonard Mott, Harold J. Short, Harry W. Beardsley, J. Marshall Hunter, Anthony J. Contiguglia, Glenn F. Mosher, J. Stanley Pryce, William E. Bouley, John L. Zabriskie, Lawrence B. Gould and. S. Sam Tripiciano?
All were dedicated local Scouting and community leaders. And all were recipients of the highest award that a Scout Council can bestow on an adult volunteer - “The Silver Beaver.” They were 15 among 58 who were so honored by the Cayuga County Council, Boy Scouts of America between 1931 and 1970. Although all those mentioned have passed on, their legacy and leadership helped guide and shape local Scouting in the years that followed. Another 64 recipients would be named through 2006. On Nov. 8 at the Cayuga County Council's 72nd annual Recognition Dinner, Cathleen A. Feocco of Union Springs was selected as the 112th recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.

Feocco followed her sons and daughter through Scouting and Venturing, serving as a Pack Committee Member and Den Leader in Pack 54 Cayuga for three years, a Troop Committee Member in Troop 58 Fleming, for seven years and an associate advisor and Venture Crew Committee member for Crew 19 for the past three years.

At the Council level she served as a unit commissioner and currently serves as Cub Scout roundtable commissioner. Cathy served as volunteer program director for Cub Camp at Camp Rotary and directed the Camp for the 2007 season. She also attended the National Camping School of the Boy Scouts of America and was certified in camp administration. Under her leadership our camp received a nationally accredited camp rating from the Boy Scouts of America for the last three years.

An active member of St. Michaels Church in Union Springs, she has also served her community through the Union Springs Central Schools P.T.O. and the Cayuga Lake Jr. Grange. In addition, she helped plan activities for the Cayuga/Onondaga Future Farmers of America and works at the food concession stand for the Union Springs soccer games. Her service also includes helping to raise funds for the school basketball team and active service as a committee member for the Frontenac Fun Days Community Event.

Feocco has given leadership and support to our council's annual Spook-O-Ree Halloween event for the past six years and along with her Venture Crew coordinated an annual nursing home holiday gift basket project for the past three years.

In 2005, she received the BSA's District Award of Merit for her service to Scouting.

The common thread that runs through all of Cathy's service is her family. A working mom she made time to be a part of her children's lives and in doing so also helped to guide the lives of countless other young people through scouting.

As we congratulate Cathy, we also acknowledge the hundreds of other Moms and Dads who give their most valuable of possessions, “their time” to work with their sons and your sons in scouting.
