An Owasco man was arrested Monday morning on charges that he fraudulently tried to collect on more than $100,000 in construction invoices, police said.
According to New York State Police in Elbridge, Daryl T. Rieks, 40, Gahwiler Road, has been charged with second-degree attempted grand larceny and third-degree attempted grand larceny, both felonies. He has also been charged with second-degree criminal impersonation, a misdemeanor.

Police investigators have accused Rieks of trying to steal money from Stafford paving company Dependable Paving by acting as the company's owner, bidding on jobs and having the invoices sent to his residence. Rieks, who was an employee at the business, allegedly attempted to have invoices from two separate jobs sent to him during August and September by a company in Grand Rapids, Mich., according to state police investigator Art Broccoli.

One was for $95,000, and the other was for $24,500, Broccoli said.

Rieks was arraigned in Skaneateles court after he turned himself in to the state police in Elbridge at 8 a.m. Monday, Broccoli said.

He was released and scheduled to appear in the Town of Spafford Court on Dec. 20.

Rieks was also charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property in relation to a separate incident.

Authorities accused Rieks of possessing and hiding a large piece of paving equipment belonging to a Syracuse company, Broccoli said.

The piece of equipment, a Caterpillar Skidster cold planer, was recovered in Moravia and returned to its owner, according to police.

Rieks is scheduled to appear on that charge in the Town of Moravia Court on Jan. 10, 2008.

" Why are we so quick to condemn a person with just the information that we get from the media? What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? There are a lot of sour grapes in small towns that would like to see a person be unsuccessful in business, especially when they are perceived as having the advantage of knowing people in high places. If this had happened to someone in a big city, there would be just a small blurb in the media and no one would pay much attention. Give it someone in a small town and the gossip is rampant. For Daryl’s sake, I hope it’s all proven wrong. "

" I was wondering as we all might be. Are all his cronies going to help get him out of trouble in his hometown? After all, he used to have some weighty clout there. For the things he may have done, I hope he's given the same type of consequence as someone who doesn't live there. "

" What in the world is this guy thinking? How embarrassing for his wife and child to know Dad's a suspected thief in a big way. C'mon Daryl, I thought you were a better guy than this.....have you proven us all wrong? "
