I read that Mayor Tim Lattimore is in trouble with the American Civil Liberties Union because he offered the beginning of the Serenity Prayer at meetings of the City Council. For those who do not know it, it reads: “Almighty God, grant us serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference.”
In these troubled times, I think our governmental officials need all they prayers they can get. And I think that even the most rabid atheist could scarcely disagree with the sentiments (or wishes) expressed in this prayer. Incidentally, our Supreme Court offers prayer at some points in their proceedings, as also do our federal and state Legislatures. So what is the beef? I suppose that some might even object to a reading of the Declaration of Independence in schools, because it states that we are “endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness ...” When The Founding Fathers wrote that no religion should be established by act of Congress, they meant that no one should have to pay taxes to support a church, unlike what happened in England and in most colonies before the Revolution. And I would also note in passing that Madalyn Murray O'Hair, who instigated the case over the rather innocuous prayer written by The New York State Board of Regents and recited daily by school children, did so after she tried to get a visa to go to the Soviet Union. But the communists decided not to let her in ... with good reason! I think we are lucky to have anyone willing to serve in local government at this stage of the game. Serving the public is largely a thankless job. And whether we agreed or disagreed with Tim over matters of policy, he was always in there, pitching. Thank you, Tim.
