Hits & Misses

HIT: To the first use of the Auburn Police Department's new steel boot. The boot is used to immobilize the cars of people who have not paid their parking ticket fines.
You can argue whether this measure is too extreme, but some people let dozens of tickets - and hundreds of dollars in fines - pile up because they are never forced to deal with any consequences.

If the boot gets scofflaws to pay their fines, it will quickly pay for itself and bring needed revenue into city coffers.

MISS: To the likely splitting up of the 315 area code. OK, this isn't exactly a surprise; western New York's 716 area code was split off with the Rochester area becoming 585 a few years back.

The increase in wireless phones and other devices that use phone numbers will exhaust the 315 area code's current supply by the third quarter of 2010, says the North American Numbering Plan Administrator.

Some unlucky area will be cast off 315 and end up with a new area code. The result will mean added costs for businesses in informing customers of the change and office supplies like business cards and stationery.

For the average household, it means your friends and family from outside 315 will have to remember to use the new area code.

HIT: To Dottie Wells, the first woman president in the history of the Falcon Sportsmen Club. Wells was picked for her organizational skills and history with the organization as well as her love of trap shooting.

Sports clubs are about more than hunting and fishing, they are places that educate youth and serve as a gathering place for people of similar pursuits.

The fact they welcome people of all genders isn't new, but this move helps eliminate lingering stereotypes.
