Riding high from their 60-48 win over Syracuse Academy of Science on Friday, the Blue Devils met up with rival Port Byron on Wednesday hoping to advance to 3-1 on the season.

After a see-saw effort that saw both teams each take the lead a handful of times, it was Port Byron that walked away with the 60-51 win.

On a night that saw the Blue Devils play without one of their best athletes in Andy Wegman, who was out with an injury, the team struggled late, and two players racked up four fouls each to further limit them on the court.

“They made key shots and we didn't,” Cato-Meridian coach Ryan Brunelle said. “That was the difference in the game. Port Byron played outstanding, though, they really shot well.”

Frank Smart led the Panthers offensive attack with 20 points, while Brad Anderson chipped in with another 12.

The Panthers had a slim 25-23 lead at the half, which stretched to just a four-point advantage heading into the fourth.

“Port Byron made a big bucket and the momentum swung their way,” Brunelle said. “We left it all out there tonight, though, we played pretty well.”

AJ Rothenburg paced Cato-Meridian with 11 points and John Bolton added 10 more. Wegman, who injure his knee against S.A.S, isn't expected to miss much more time.

The Blue Devils (2-2) host another big rival next, when they play Weedsport on Friday.
