No better place to raise a family than Finger Lakes region
Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone in the food services industry from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight Doug Mason, owner of Doug's Market.
Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?
A. Meatloaf, it's just something I grew up on and it has stayed with me.
Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am at home in the kitchen, I __________.
A. Don't cook, I really enjoy going out and letting other people wait on us.
Q. What do you like most about living and working in the Finger Lakes region?
A. The general region and the scenery. There's no better place to raise a family. In my former life I had an opportunity to leave and I turned it down to stay here.
Q. If you were given $1 million to open your own restaurant or bar, describe the bar or restaurant and what type of food you would serve.
A. It would be a family-style comfort food place, probably a diner.
Q. Where would it be located?
A. Right here in Auburn, we have a big need for something like that, especially a place open after 8 at night.
Q. On the day of your restaurant/bar's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be your first three guests, who would they be?
A. Probably my father and my two grandfathers.
Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.
A. Forgetting pizza in the oven and not being able to remember people's names.
Q. What is your favorite junk food?
A. Tortilla chips.
Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?
A. Service to customers, taking care of employees and being a careful shopper.
Q. If you weren't working in the food business what would you like to be doing?
A. I've always been in retail, so probably working at a hardware or auto parts store. It's pretty much what I know. And it would be something with a shorter work day.
Q. Ugh. What's the one food which you absolutely can't stomach? Why?
A. Eggplant. It's the one thing I refuse to eat.
