A house fire in Cato led to the arrest of one person for criminal possession of marijuana, a second degree felony.
Zachary J. Smithler, 18, of 3214 Jorolemon Road, Weedsport, was arraigned in the town of Cato Court by Town Justice James Dishaw and remanded to Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $500 cash bail.
At 11:39 a.m. Wednesday, five fire departments, along with CIMVAC and Red Creek ambulances responded to a 911 call at 3214 Jorolemon Road in the town of Cato.
Weedsport, Cato, Meridian, Jordan, and Port Byron fire departments extinguished the fire, but the residence sustained heavy damage to the interior.
During the course of the fire investigation and overhaul, a large quantity of marijuana was found inside the residence.
The sheriff's office conducted a search and recovered approximately nine pounds of processed/packaged marijuana.
The fire's cause is still being investigated but is not believed to be related to the marijuana at this time.
The sheriff's office and the Cayuga County Fire Investigation Team are continuing to investigate.
