An Auburn man arrested early Saturday morning was found to be wanted under a false alias in Virginia, where police say he has an extensive criminal history.
Alton Joyner, 44, of 28 Franklin St. Apt. 7, was arrested after the Auburn Police Department connected him to an attempted break-in at Rite Aid Pharmacy on the corner of East Genesee and North Fulton Streets, police said. When officers were dispatched to the busienss at 2:55 a.m. for a burglary alarm, they found that someone tried to enter the store by prying open plywood covering a window on a part of the store that was being renovated, according to police.
Officers stopped a suspicious male identified as Joyner, who police said was linked to the attempted entry by a witness who observed him flee the scene and a piece of clothing left at the scene. It appeared that no entry was made and nothing had been taken from the store, according to the APD.
Joyner was charged with third-degree attempted burglary and fourth-degree criminal mischief, arraigned in city court and remanded to Cayuga County Jail.
After police electronically submitted Joyner's fingerprints, they were notified that he is wanted in the state of Virginia on a parole violation under the name Michael A. Joyner, which is the name of his brother. Alton Joyner has has been arrested and convicted in Virginia for a number of crimes that include burglary, robbery, use of firearms and attempted murder, according to the APD, but all of the arrests and convictions were under the name Michael A. Joyner, police said.
According to police, the actual Michael A. Joyner, whose last known address is 5 Delevan St., Auburn, has no connection to his brother's arrests and convictions. However, Michael A. Joyner has a criminal history of his own and is currently wanted by the APD on warrents for petit larceny and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, police said.
Auburn police ask anyone with information about the whereabouts of Michael A. Joyner to call 253-3231.
