Billy Joel releasesanti-war song
Billy Joel has released a new pop single, the anti-war “Christmas in Fallujah.” Just don't expect to hear his voice on it.
At 58, Joel felt he was too old to sing the song, which was inspired by letters the Piano Man received from soldiers in Iraq. So he gave it to fellow Long Islander Cass Dillon, an aspiring singer-songwriter.
“I thought it should be somebody young, about a soldier's age,” Joel said in a statement on his Web site.
Net proceeds will be donated to Homes for Our Troops, which builds homes for severely wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Newsday reported that during a performance Saturday night in Chicago, Joel brought Dillon out about halfway through his set to sing “Fallujah.” The performance ended with servicemen lining the back of the stage, shouting “oo-rah!” as part of the song's chorus.
Kiefer Sutherland sentenced to 48 days
Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced Wednesday to 48 days in jail for racking up a second drunken-driving arrest in three years and immediately reported to a city lockup.
The star of the Fox TV drama “24” was being processed at the Glendale city jail, said Officer John Balian.
Sutherland, 40, who pleaded no contest in October to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of .08, appeared in court with his attorney and politely answered the judge's questions, said Assistant City Attorney Dan Jeffries.
His request to serve his time at the Glendale city jail was granted and he was ordered to complete the sentence by March 30, Jeffries said.
“Kiefer made the decision to surrender to custody immediately,” his attorney, Blair Berk, told The Associated Press.
Harrelson and Wilson rough it in Peru
A cheap hotel and a bath in an irrigation ditch - not the usual travel arrangements for Hollywood celebrities.
But Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson were apparently out to show the locals in Peru that they aren't your average high-maintenance movie stars.
Local celebrity gossip program “Magaly TeVe” aired video Wednesday night of the two actors deep in Peru's Andes bathing in an irrigation ditch wearing nothing but their boxer shorts. It showed the pair pouring handfuls of water over themselves under the highland sun.
Harrelson and Wilson were reportedly visiting a local orphanage they support near Cuzco, the ancient Incan capital.
They dodged reporters at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport on their way to a hotel that cost less than $50 a night, “Magaly TeVe” said. They flew to Cuzco Wednesday morning.
