AUBURN -- An Auburn man who eluded police for weeks after being accused of drunk driving pleaded guilty to two counts of felony charges of vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle Thursday at Cayuga County Court.
Keith E. Titus, 27, waived prosecution by indictment before admitting he drove a vehicle owned by his employer into a tree on South Lewis Street Aug. 8, causing serious injury to a passenger, after he consumed several alcoholic drinks. Titus also admitted that he did not have a driver's license at the time of the incident due to a misdemeanor DWI offense from August 2000.

Titus, of 33 Pulaski St., was treated at University Hospital in Syracuse after the incident, but left through a side door when police came to charge him Aug. 8. Three other passengers were injured in the accident. The Auburn Police Department caught up with Titus and arrested him Aug. 25.

According to Judge Thomas Leone, Titus will likely receive a sentence of 6 months in jail and five years of probation for pleading guilty to the charges, pending review of a pre-sentence report. The maximum sentence is up to seven years in state prison, Leone said in court.

Titus is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 20.

" He was already driving without a license from a drunk driving incident, so this wouldn't stop him from getting behind the wheel of a car again either. A little more prison time and mandated rehab for this one. "

" Are we covering up the fact that this "guilty" man skipped away from police, after being treated? What an embarrassment! AND now, he only gets a simple 6 months w/5yrs. probation? WAKE UP AUBURN/CAYUGA COUNTY, PEOPLE ARE LAUGHING!!! "

" Pentangelli, you have shown your ignorance with that statement. Real criminals... A highly intoxicated driver behind the wheel of a 5000 lb vehicle/weapon, which nearly killed one of the passengers...and you say he's not a real criminal.. lol.. a drunk driver has a greater chance of killing someone than most other crimes. I agree with the professional help, but if he's free he can get behind the wheel anytime... who's goint to stop him? At least in jail/prison he might get some mandatory programs. You need to do some research on DWI and the associated societal impacts before you open your mouth again. Your opinion would most definetely be different if he had struck and killed or injured one of your family members, or if you ever lost someone to a drunk driver. Get educated before you speak again...! "

" put the real criminals in jail...George Bush and Cheney...the DWI violators need professional help and so do you, if you think jail is going to change anything. "

" 6 months and 5 years probation.. what a joke.. numerous run ins with the law and is facing 6 months in jail. What a joke.. Titus you need to be in prison for a few years, but this is Cayuga County, worst Court systems in the state, afraid to go to trial. Plea plea... plea... "
