No charges have been filed in what is being called a tragic death of a 4-year-old boy in Elbridge, according to the New York State Police.
The investigation is still continuing and a medical examination will be conducted on the boy, who sustained internal injuries after falling from a bed's headboard, said Paul Olson, a state police investigator.
However, Olson said the incident still appears to have been accidental in nature.
“There is no reason to believe at this point that this is going to result in any charges being filed,” Olson said Monday.
State police were called to a residence on Jordan Road around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday after receiving a report of a child falling in the home, officials said.
According to police, the child was standing on the headboard in a second-story room and reached for an icicle outside the window when he fell back into the room.
The boy experienced difficulty breathing and was transported to Auburn Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
At the time of the incident, the 4-year-old boy and two other siblings, ages 5 and 8, had been left in the care of a 12-year-old sibling, police said.
There is no statute or law indicating that a baby-sitter has to be any particular age to watch a child, Olson said.
Olson also said that the investigation has shown that the adult was running a brief errand, and the oldest child immediately contacted the parent when the boy fell.
“I don't feel it is likely that this would have been much different if a parent had been on the scene,” Olson said.
State police have not released the child's name.
