Geneva General Hospital's Acute Rehabilitation Unit was recently recognized by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR) with the unit's patient outcomes ranking in the 98th percentile when compared to similar facilities and programs nationally.
The Acute Rehabilitation Unit received a “2007 Top Performer Award” from UDSMR in honor of its high level of performance and outstanding rehabilitation program excellence.
In recognizing Geneva General Hospital, the Uniform Data System evaluated 827 qualifying facilities using its Program Evaluation Model.
UDS's goals in evaluating programs nationwide are “to identify and recognize facilities that perform at a high level, to work with them to learn how they achieve high performance, and then to share what is learned with others to elevate the performance of all.”
The Acute Rehabilitation Unit, which celebrated its 10th anniversary of service to the entire Finger Lakes region in September, serves patients following a stroke or other neurologic condition, amputation, polyarthritis or orthopedic injury or surgery.
Performance is based on improvements in a patient's Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score between admission and discharge. The degree of FIM improvement and the ability to reduce the patient's length of stay (LOS) constitute the core outcome metrics used by UDS in evaluating the unit's overall performance and the level of efficiency of its programs.
“The average length of stay of our amputee patients is 13 days versus 16 days elsewhere in the region, while the overall improvement in a patient's self-care FIM is 50 percent higher than comparable facilities,” stated Deane Butler, director of Rehabilitation Services in a press release. “Our stroke and orthopedic patients have achieved similar results. This means that a patient being treated at the Acute Rehabilitation Unit in Geneva is more likely to go home sooner and that the patient will have greater functional independence and mobility as a result of therapy and care received from our staff.”
Geneva General Hospital's Acute Rehabilitation Unit is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
