ELBRIDGE - 'Twas the first day of December, and everyone was snuggled in the Elbridge Free Library.
The library was packed Saturday for the annual tree lighting and Christmas concert on a chilly early winter afternoon, with music provided by the Jordan-Elbridge Community Band.
Nancy Burns, of Auburn, has played with the band for many years. She wore a Santa hat and had a festive seasonal vest to help each and all get in the Christmas spirit. Her instrument is the euphonium, a baritone-like brass instrument.
“I love it. It's part of what I live for,” said Burns, who also plays in the Auburn Civic Band.
Maria Hare is the conductor of the Community Band.
“We do a series of summer concerts, July and August, the second and fourth Friday at the Elbridge Fire Department,” Hare said. The number of players in the band varies from 15 to 20 depending on everyone's summer vacation plans.
One of the highlights of the concert was a composition by sophomore Matt Sullivan of Jordan-Elbridge High School, “Sleighing Through Christmas Town.” This musical Eagle played the tuba on Saturday. He plays in the marching band, also plays drummer, and is a key part of the high school's spring musicals.
“It was a great thing he composed it and wrote all the parts at 15. And he conducted it. He's very talented,” Hare said. “It had kind of a Mozart flavor to it. But very happy, very jumpy, upbeat tune.”
Greg Hunter, board president of the Elbridge library, has lived in the area for the past 34 years.
“They've done this for us for many years,” Hunter said. “For them only rehearsing this afternoon, it was outstanding. They're just incredible.”
The concert was free. There was also refreshments. And, what holiday party would be complete without an appearance from Santa Claus. Mr. Kringle gave each child a book.
The director of the Elbridge Free Library is Karen White, who has been in that position since 1981. She was born and raised in Elbridge, and has seen plenty of changes over the past 26 years - there are now six public computers to use, the movie videos prominently displayed near the front door.
“Of course, we feel like a video store sometimes instead of a library,” White said.
Originally the home of the Danforth Lumber building, the library doubled in space to 5,000 square feet in 1995.
