SENNETT - The sound of music wafted down Turnpike Road from the Sennett Federated Church hall on Saturday, but it wasn't the gospel choir.
Local bikers were rocking to Sound Sensations DJ, Dale Derby, at the spaghetti dinner they hosted.
The benefit was for Kevin Doney, 40, of Weedsport, who underwent double bypass open heart surgery last month.
More than 100 guests attended the event to help Doney, founding president of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the STAR Society bikers club, with financial assistance for medical, family and household expenses.
Everything from a wooden doll house and wood furniture to certificates for merchandise and food was up for grabs.
A silent auction table displayed such items as a musical Christmas carousel, mini motorbikes and a curio cabinet.
Pond estimated that the fundraiser might get as much as $400 from the auction.
Ken Cameron of the Syracuse Chapter of the Star Society motorcycle club, played head chef as he stirred the pot of spaghetti sauce spiked with Ragu. Ray Blaylock, of Weedsport, and Barb Bacon, of Auburn, served up the food.
On Oct. 17, Doney suffered a mild heart attack on the job at Nucor Steel Auburn, Inc.
He was grateful to those who helped him get emergency treatment quickly, Phil Meyers, a member of the building and grounds crew, and Al Pearce, the company nurse.
“When I actually felt something wrong, I got the first ride I could,” Doney said.
“Phil Meyers was there to help me. Al Pearce got me right up to the hospital.”
The next morning he was shocked to find out that his arteries were 50 percent blocked in four places, 90 percent blocked in another, and 100 percent blocked in the last.
Doney said he's very active and had no signs of heart problems prior to the emergency, although he was having side effects from cholesterol-lowering medication. He believes his condition is hereditary, as his father also had heart problems.
“Right now I've just started cardio-rehab,” he said. “I'll eventually be able to do everything I do now.”
The STAR society, a local motorcycle club, was founded in Syracuse in July 1999 as a motorcycle riding club.
The Finger Lakes chapter was founded in 2004.
The club tries to give back to communities by sponsoring many worthy causes.
