Charles B. Hubbard, of 81 Wall St., today joined the ranks of the Auburn men who have applied for enlistment in the United States Navy since war with Germany was declared. Hubbard made application through Postmaster P.T. Quigley and was accepted subject to final exam by doctors in Syracuse.

Army of volunteers begins determined move toward community chest goal after stirring pleas of commanders. All teams busy with city-wide canvas to collect $75,000 required for operation of city's helpful agencies.

Experts predict holiday shoppers nationwide will stand in line longer this year. The predictions are based on the dire need for temporary retail help during the holiday season. Experts say that applicants for these positions are scarce. So scarce, in fact, that retailers across the country are offering large merchandise discounts and higher wages to their temporary employees.

The $81.87 million proposed 2003 spending plan which will be the prime topic of discussion at a meeting of the county Legislature Tuesday carries a tax levy increase of up to 16 percent. A core group of legislators on the Ways and Means, Public Safety and Public Works committees have labored on the budget since July. The increase started at 32 percent, and they cut it half during more than a dozen meetings at the cost of services and employees.
