Faithful feet

A Lyons-based Christian dance company will be using pointe shoes to make a point about faith at a performance in Auburn Friday.
Pointes of Faith Dancers will intertwine the art of dance with the power of ministry at the Cayuga Community College auditorium.

“Our goal basically is to spread the Gospel through dance and other art forms,” said Diane LaValley, who runs the nonprofit dance company with her husband, Dick, daughter, Rachel Platt and son-in-law, Douglas. “We don't get into doctrine.

“There's no such thing as a perfect doctrine, the only thing that's perfect is Christ,” LaValley said.

The concept of dance ministry developed from a fateful mission to New York City, where Rachel Platt used her talent to preach on the streets.

“I could see so much hurting and suffering out in the world,” Platt said. “I wanted to share some of the peace that I had.

“I want other people to know this hope that I have,” she said.

After graduating college with a degree in dance, Platt performed at youth prisons with her first dance company, Turning Pointe.

“When people saw the dancing, they tended to open up,” Platt said. “They were open then to seek out God.”

The studio and performance company formed in 2000 and now does about seven shows each year across the state and region.

“It's an art form that paints a picture deeper than other can create,” said Pointes of Faith Creative Director Platt.

The performance titled “Victory” will feature three professional dancers and three apprentices. Platt wrote and choreographed the two-hour program bookended by a ballet and modern dance performance.

The first half features a ballet based on the biblical story of King Solomon, who abandoned his prestige to be a shepherd. After an intermission, Platt will tell her personal story of redemption through modern dance.

It's a testimony she wouldn't be able to do with her voice, Platt said.

“I'm just so amazed that every time I and the dancers go with it, how God uses that,” Platt said. “Everybody who comes leaves with something.”

“Many times we have people that will weep through the whole thing,” LaValley said. “We don't know what's going to happen and we don't always know what the result is, but we do know that people have been ministered to.”

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m.
