A man was assaulted and robbed at an Auburn residence Tuesday night, according to police.

According to the Auburn Police Department, officers responded to a report of a robbery in the area of Washington Street and Orchard Avenue at approximately 11:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a 33-year-old Auburn man with minor head injuries, officials said.

The man told police he had been staying with a friend at 3 McConnell Ave. when two men knocked on the door and demanded money from his friend for what they said was an unpaid debt, officials said. The man went outside to confront the men, and one of the suspects struck him in the head with a rock, police said.

The men took an undisclosed quantity of cash from the victim's pockets before fleeing the scene toward the area of The Bel Air apartments on the 200 block of Genesee Street, according to the APD. The victim refused medical treatment, police said.

Police described one suspect as a dark-skinned, black male in his late teens or early twenties, six feet tall with a thin build and wearing a black coat. The second suspect was described as a light-skinned, black male in his late teens or early twenties, five feet, eight to ten inches tall with a medium build, and wearing a tan coat.

Police ask anyone with information to call 253-3235 or 255-4703.

" This area is always getting bad press. Why? Because it attracts the wrong residential clients. And now they want to throw Community Block Grant Funds into this neighborhood on top of it. Catch 22. Provide grant $$ or low interest loans to property owners to fix up homes requiring them to rent to "low-income" tenants. How the heck does that change the current situation? Throwing money at Orchard St. while requiring owners to meet certain guidelines - provide "low-income" housing only continues the madness. This is not the solution. "

" Re: Orchard St Area...The law enforcement people need to clean up these neighborhoods. Start with the slum lords who rent to these people. Make them get the homes up to code and keep them there. Then maybe they won't rent to people who destroy their properties, since the money to restore them will come out of their own pockets. As it is now, they don't care since the rents are vouchered & they get paid no matter what the place looks like and do minimal upkeep on them. "

" You can forget about doing anything about the garbage that lives there. As long as the prison is in Auburn, you're going to have criminals living in the city, and not just behind the walls. "

" When I was a kid during the 50's in Auburn, the corner of Orchard and Washington Street was the best place in town to get Lemon Ice. It sounds like now you need the Lemon Ice to take care of the bruises from the beatings. DCG is correct, a more agressive approach needs to be taken rather than passive. Let's get out there and kick the perpertrators butts. "

" Here's a solution for the Orchard Street mess. How about having the home owners in that area sell their properties to the casino owners? Allow them to build their casino and clean up the area. Those who currently "dirty" up the neighborhood can go somewhere else and live. Maybe Syracuse? After all, they do have a busline to Auburn's prison. They can still visit their families there. "

" Dear Mr. Mayor, Mayor Elect, Code Enforcement, Police Chief - When is someone going to take ownership/responsibility for this neighborhood and DO something to improve it ? It seems to me I read what is basically this same article every few weeks. You need to get aggressive instead of being passive with this area of Auburn. "
