What do people “get” from chiropractic? Most people assume they will feel better, but that can mean so many different things.
You can talk to patients who say they were able to return to work or remain working. Others have been able to avoid surgery while others receive benefits after a failed surgery. Many people have turned to chiropractic because a chronic problem became unbearable.
In a deeper respect, they have learned to erase their fears by understanding how their bodies were reacting to stress. Their participation in chiropractic care gives them a renewed confidence. When problems are resolved, something is learned, providing a positive emotional impression. You don't always have to look for a specific outcome, however. Sometimes receiving an adjustment without any expectations is a precious gift, as well.
My father died in his sleep a number of years ago. While I was waiting for a family member to pick me up on the way to our hometown, I called my best friend, also a chiropractor. He came over as soon as I told him my news and offered to give me an adjustment.
Lying down on the adjusting table, sadness and anxiety were racing through me. What would the next few days be like? Why now? Why did my father die so suddenly? What was I going to do without him?
These are questions no one could answer for me.
What would an adjustment do for me at that moment? During that time I was able to open up to the reality that my father would not be physically around to guide me. It was time to trust that I could face life on my own.
During that adjustment, I decided to be more alive in honor of my father. It was with my friend's silent support while he gave me this adjustment that I was given a calmness that connected a memorable past to a hopeful future.
I also learned that day that chiropractors are not merely adjusting the spine as it says in all the office brochures found in waiting rooms. Chiropractors “give” adjustments to release the physical and mental heaviness that holds us back from experiencing a full life.
It is this giving that prompts chiropractors to donate time and money to two wonderful chiropractic children's centers: Kentuckiana Children's Center, Louisville, Ky. and Oklahaven Children's Center, Oklahoma City, Okla. Children with physical and emotional challenges such as cerebral palsy and behavioral disorders are served free of charge. The doctors who have volunteered their time to these children are endlessly touched by their interactions.
When a developmentally disabled child cannot communicate his or her needs, being able to give an adjustment to their delicate spines is wonderful for the giver as well as the receiver. Everyone needs their neurological tensions released so they can have a brighter future, and helping children is that much sweeter.
For all the people who wonder what they can get from chiropractic care, I hope they discover how to be more alive. While I can give people chiropractic adjustments, it is what they eventually give themselves that is much more profound.
