SYRACUSE - Tim Moran passed for 272 yards and three touchdowns and Ben Waldron ran for three scores to lead West Genesee in a 42-21 upset over No. 1 state ranked Monroe-Woodbury to claim the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class-AA crown Sunday.
It was the first state title for West Genesee (11-2) and the second straight loss in the finals for Monroe-Woodbury (12-1), the only two losses over the last three years and 38 games for the Crusaders.
Moran, the game's MVP, hit George Eunice for 15 yards in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.
Moran continued to dissect the Crusaders
secondary in the second quarter and gave the Wildcats a 28-7 lead when he hit Joe Fazio for a 44-yard score.
Moran capped off his day with a 31-yard strike over the middle to his tight-end Luke Cometti with five minutes left in the game.
Moran was 19-of-27 with one interception. Cometti had three catches for 70 yards and kicked six pats.
Fazio, Moran's favorite target, caught six balls for 96 yards.
Waldron rushed 23 times for 85 yards with touchdown runs of two, four and five yards.
Monroe-Woodbury quarterback Dan Scalo put the Crusaders on the board first, engineering a six play, 61-yard drive, rushing for 43 of the 61 including the final 15 for the first of his two touchdowns. Scalo had 22 carries for 127 yards including a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Chris Boyce scored just before the half for the Crusaders to cut the Wildcats lead to 28-14.
Bishop Ludden 21, Dobbs Ferry 16
SYRACUSE - Connor Sweeney threw for two scores and Daquan Grobsmith ran 20 times for 116 yards and a touchdown to lead Bishop Ludden in a victory over the previously No. 1 state ranked Dobbs Ferry to win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class-C championship.
The Gaelic Knights (12-1) did the improbable in winning their first state title, snapping the Eagles (11-1) 23-game winning streak and quest for a fourth title in six years. Bishop Ludden has now won 12 straight games.
Sweeney, the game's MVP, put Bishop Ludden on the board with the games first play, an 80-yard strike to Wendell Williams on a fly pattern down the left sideline.
Sweeney and Williams connected again in the second quarter for a 34-yard score. Sweeney was 8-of-10 for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Williams caught four balls for 134 yards.
With six minutes left in the game the Eagles were driving, trailing 21-10, but Grobsmith, intercepted Frank Scattaretico on a halfback-option pass, returning the pick 23 yards to kill the Dobbs Ferry drive.
Dobbs Ferry managed to score with two minutes left in the game when quarterback Trevor Saunders scored from three yards. Saunders was 9-for 23 passing for 176 yards.
Matt Goldweber kicked a 34-yard field goal for the Eagles and Devonte Brailsford capped 14 play, 66-yard drive with a one-yard run to pull Dobbs Ferry to with four 14-10 at the half.
