Time to make holiday wreaths

SCIPIO - Thanksgiving Day weekend traditionally means the start of the holiday season, but for many area residents it is also time for the annual wreath-making workshop hosted by the Southern Cayuga Garden Club.

Debi Lampman, center, of Bedlam Gardens, gives directions on how to make a wreath to a group gathered at the Scipio Presbyterian Church on Sunday.
“The workshop has become an intergenerational event for many families,” said Southern Cayuga Garden Club consultant Debi Lampman during the annual wreath-making workshop held at the Scipioville Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon. “I have been attending for 13 years now and there are people that have been attending a lot longer than that.”

Lampman said that the workshop began many years ago as a fundraiser for the Howland Stone Store Museum but was transferred to a fundraiser for the garden club when the museum decided not to host it any longer.

She is also the owner of Bedlam Gardens located in King Ferry.

For Sue Gage and her daughter, Katie Meislahn, who discovered the workshop last year, the event has already become a mother-and-daughter tradition that will continue for many years to come.

“Now that Katie lives in Albany, it is a nice way to spend time together,” Gage said. “I enjoyed the workshop so much last year that I cut out the ad and put in my calendar for this year.”

The pair said that they will both be hanging their freshly made wreaths on the front door of their homes.

Mary Rand, of Auburn, said that she also discovered the workshop last year but could not resist attending again this year. In fact, she enjoyed the event so much, that she brought her friend and coworker, Cheryl Gabak along.

“I don't know how it will turn out,” Gabak said. “But at least I know that I made it myself.”

Gabak said that she plans to place her wreath on the gravesites of her parents.

The day was a little more special for Rand because it was also her birthday.

Starting with a wire frame, attendees were taught how to interweave fresh shrubs and greenery to create their own Christmas wreath. They were also encouraged to bring along their own decorative finishing touches such as ribbons and bows.

“It is just a fun annual event to get the season going,” said garden club member Judy Jordan.
