Back when Dr. Charles Scioscia was in high school in Washington state, he saw a historical presentation on how medicine was introduced to the Western hemisphere. Right then, his interest was piqued.

Years later, that curiosity has turned into a hugely successful career.
After relocating to New York, Scioscia attended medical school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and has since served at several renowned medical institutions, including many years in the Department of Rehabilitation at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
Now, Cayuga County residents can experience Scioscia's expertise for themselves.
After moving to Fayetteville last month, the physician opened a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation practice in Auburn.
“I treat a wide variety of patients, but my main focus is those with neck and back pain,” Scioscia said from his office. “I have experience in dealing with spinal (impairments), so that's probably my target area.”
Neck and back pain can be attributed to a variety of causes, he explained, including degenerative disease, trauma and family history.
“A lot of people don't know this, but lower back pain is very prevalent among younger people,” he said. “Growth spurts and overexertion can be contributing factors to this type of pain.”
Scioscia also treats patients who suffer from arthritis, which he said can occur more frequently in the winter months.
“Cold weather can make people's arthritis almost overbearing, and our office is able to treat that,” he said.
In addition, Scioscia cares for patients who suffer from neurological disorders like traumatic brain injury and stroke.
“Plus, we deal with people who have a sports injury,” he said, noting that he offers detailed plans for rehabilitation to patients with a wide array of infirmities.
In his spare time, he is an avid runner, having completed the New York City Marathon 13 times and competing in more than 20 marathons overall, along with dozens of shorter races.
“I get comments from a lot of people who tell me what great shape I'm in,” he said sheepishly, adding that he tries to let his excellent physical condition be a kind of “model” for his patients.
Overall, Scioscia is ecstatic about his new location.
“I'm really happy to be here in Auburn,” he said. “I'm looking forward to meeting new patients and making new friends.”
