Taking a swing

Do you want to improve your softball skills, and don#'t know anyone to help you?
Well at LeMoyne College on Sundays, you can attend a session and learn from their coaching staff and team of 15 girls, including former Auburn High School softball player Amanda Daum.

There are two types of sessions to help improve players' softball skills - pitching and hitting.

The pitching sessions run from 8:30-10 a.m. and then there is a half hour break. The lessons run for eight days.

The hitting sessions go from 10:30 a.m. until noon. During the hitting session, there is also a fielding drills going on.

Auburn softball coach Bob Lee has helped out over the past seven years - as long as he's headed up the Maroons varsity squad.

“Basically, the LeMoyne coaches walk around and work with the girls on their hip rotation, mechanics, and dropping of the arms,” Lee said. “That goes on for an hour and half. Then there#is a half hour break for the girls doing the hitting sessions and pitching session too, but also for the girls for the hitting session to arrive.#”

The nice thing about the clinic is that its not just for Auburn girls. It#'s open to any girl between the ages of 8-18 interested in softball and wanting to improve.

Lee goes to every session to pick up some drills that he can use on his team. Every year, he recommends to his team that they attend.

“I always tell them to go. I might not pick something up because I#'m used to their traits. If someone else sees them they might be able to pick something I couldn#'t. It#'s nice to have other people coach you and instruct you,#” Lee said.

The stations for hitting consist of fielding, hitting off of tees, and hitting in the two LeMoyne batting cages.

The fielding includes throwing drills, soft hand drills, and drop-step drills. The throwing drill helps you learn how to snap your wrist when throwing and also to follow through with the throw.

During all of the sessions, the coaches and players walk around to work with the girls and instruct them with drills to work on their own performance.

“These are drills every coach teaches, but they teach them differently,#” Lee said. “The kids can go to as many as they want. They can go once, twice, or all eight sessions. It#'s all between the child, and their parents.#”

Locally, Auburn doesn#'t have its own team clinic, but they do host a pitching clinic opened to third graders all the way into eighth grade, which starts on Jan. 7.

“The girls for the team work out in the school. They're in the cages and gym doing hitting, pitching and fielding drills, so we don#'t host our own clinic. I just recommend them to go to clinics and do what they want to get better. I can#'t force someone to get better, they have to want to and try,#” Lee said. “LeMoyne#'s softball team for the past few years has been regularly in the College World Series. As a Division II school, they are a very good program and they have great coaches. LeMoyne is nationally ranked, too.#”

Binghamton offers an indoor league during the winter, as the only other program that is offered locally. There are many summer and spring leagues that take place, but for those players that want to concentrate on softball once the snow falls, LeMoyne may be the way to go.
