I hope everyone is having a peaceful and relaxing Thanksgiving weekend with their loved ones. The sights and sounds of Christmas are starting to appear. Relax and enjoy them, and try not to let the thought of shopping overwhelm you. A gift card to a favorite store along with a big hug can be the best Christmas gift for someone you love. Homemade cookies are really thoughtful, too. The simplest gifts touch the heart.
The season of Advent begins next weekend; the time of year when we prepare our hearts for the coming of our Lord.
Try to free your mind of shopping worries now so that you may enjoy and reflect upon the real meaning of Christmas during Advent. Try to keep it simple, and use your energy to make Christmas a little nicer for those who need a hand. On Christmas morning you'll be so glad you did.
I loved the recent photo in the paper of the children meeting Santa Claus upon his arrival at the Fingerlakes Mall. The photographer really captured the moment; their little faces said it all.
The Roosevelt Memorial Baptist Church Choir and Male Chorus will hold its annual Gospel Explosion at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the church, 101 Fitch Ave., Auburn.
The group's voices will be joined by the St. Luke's Baptist Church Male Chorus of Syracuse. Tickets are $5 for adults and are available at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Marcus Coleman Scholarship Fund at Auburn High School. What a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season. I hope to see you there.
The United Church of Auburn will host The Incredible Christmas Cookie Sale from 9 a.m. until sold out Saturday, Dec. 15, at the church, 77 Metcalf Ave., Auburn. Delight in the taste of wonderfully homemade Christmas cookies baked with love by some really awesome church ladies. You select the cookies you want and cookie boxes are provided.
The cost is $6 per pound. Call 252-4397 for more details.
Mark your calendars for two more important events this month. St. Joseph's School in Auburn will hold its annual Christmas Concert Thursday, Dec. 13, and SS. Peter & Paul School will hold its first Christmas Bazaar on Sunday Dec. 9. More information on both to follow next week.
The Holy Family Church on North Street in Auburn will sponsor a Red Cross Blood Drive from 7:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Saturday Dec. 1, in the gym. Please call Anne at 253-7064 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Holy Family would also like to congratulate its class of 2008 high school seniors receiving the Hands of Christ Award to honor their Christian works and example: Nora Bachman, Hannah Bennett, Nicholas Chapman, Theresa Church, Maggie Hoercher, Mark Lawson, Elena Madden and Suzanne Smith. God bless each one of you and watch over you as you become young adults.
The feast of Christ the King will be honored at Holy Family Sunday, Nov. 25th, with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament beginning at noon (after the 11:15 a.m. Mass) and concluding with Benediction at 2 p.m.
Please come and spend some quiet time with Jesus.
Diligent and careful planning for the Chapel House Homeless Shelter in the Holy Family gym continues to take place. An opening date is expected to be announced very soon.
Special thanks to Steve Bianco and Bill Simmonds for their hard work installing a custom made shower, and to Reister's Appliances for donating a much needed washer and dryer. Also to Johnston Paper for their very generous donation of paper products and supplies.
Special thanks also to all the ladies at the Boyle Center who have been knitting hats, scarves and gloves for the homeless.
God bless you Holy Family parish and all who have helped in this endeavor to give food, shelter and clothing to our brothers living outdoors in this cold, cold weather. I can not even imagine what that must be like and how horrible it must be.
Remember this year, try to keep it simple, lend a hand to help another, and relax and enjoy this beautiful Christmas season. God loves you.
