Why, oh why, must the inundation of Christmas begin so early? Now, I am a big fan of Christmas and its accompanying musical accompaniment. The day after Thanksgiving? Fine #- bring it on; it's officially “the Christmas season.”
But the day after Halloween? Puh-leeze!
This is precisely why I became a country music fan a few years ago, since it was pretty much the only station I could get at work that wasn't playing the barking “Jingle Bells” dogs all day, every day. If this continues, we will soon find a radio station with 24/7 Christmas music beginning on July 5. I cannot possibly be alone here. We should unite and put together some sort of protest for '08.
Now, on to what's up in “Weedsville.” First of all, congratulations to our field hockey, cross-country and football teams on their extremely successful seasons. They've all worked really hard - now it's time to get out there and cheer on our volleyball, swimming and basketball teams. Be sure to check your school news notes for schedules.
Weedsport isn't just about sports. We have quite a list of students who participated in All-County Festival Nov. 16 and 17, at Southern Cayuga. In the Senior High Chorus: Lacy Atkins, Lauryn Bates, Erin Daly, Amy Lewis, Jana Mlodzianowski, Matt O'Neil, Jim Putvin, Jessica Putvin, Taylor Roe, Casey Sears, Nick Silcox, Nicole Slauson, Chelsea Stoecker, Logan Thompson and Megan Wager. In the Jr. High Band: Seth Baker, Austin Bates, Elizabeth Chirco, Jessica Dec. Denise Dolph, Caitlin Jones, Jonathan Mathews, Erin Reilley, Rick Swientonioski, Nicole Tabone and Carijo Taro.
There's also an enthusiastic group of middle schoolers who are preparing for their musical “Aladdin, Jr.,” scheduled for Dec. 7 and 8, in the high school auditorium. Again, check your news notes for ticket information, and be sure to take the whole family for a fun night “at the theah-tah” (she says with a badly done British accent).
The senior government class presented another fantastic Veterans Day celebration Nov. 14. It's always emotional to see so many former and current service members enter the gym together, to see candles lit for former Weedsport students who have been killed in the line of duty and to have members of each branch of the military stand during their individual anthems. Special guests included Mary Parry, an ambassador for the USO since its inception in 1941; and Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey Sturtevant from the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.
Members of the Class of 2008 then entertained the capacity crowd in a USO-style show hosted by Bob Hope (Jordan Petrocci); Markie Kreplin and Zachary Phillips grooved as Sonny & Cher; Matt O'Neil crooned Dean Martin's “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime;” Gavin Johnston and Tim Vargason did a phenomenal job as Abbott and Costello with a classic “Who's on First?” routine; Casey Sears did “Walkin' After Midnight” and “Back in Baby's Arms” as Patsy Cline; Heidi Robinson and Taylor Roe battled as “Lucy vs. Lucy” to Jake Ekross' Ricky Ricardo with a fun rendition of “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better;” Lacy Atkins strutted her “9 to 5” stuff as Dolly Parton; Connie Francis (Katie Schlegel) and her backup dancers Allison Beardsley, Kim Gilfus, Emily McLoughlin and Heidi Robinson performed an energetic “Stupid Cupid;” and Frankie Valli (Luke Baker) & the Four Seasons (Randy Condes, Gavin Johnston, Matt O'Neil and Tim Vargason) brought the house down with the classic “Can't Take My Eyes Off of You/I Love You Baby” medley.
I'm sure the majority of the students in that gym had no idea who these people are/were, but it's the stuff I grew up listening to at home, and I know the “elders” in attendance surely appreciated the selections. A separate program was also held that afternoon at the elementary school, following a senior assembly, which included lunch with the veterans.
Don't forget to mark your calendars for Weedsport's annual Old Tyme Christmas from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, with a 5K fun run earlier that morning. Proceeds benefit the Brutus-Sennett Food Pantry, so get on out there and chat with your neighbors, put something warm and delicious in your belly, do some snow bowling, sing some carols and benefit your community all at the same time.
Programming note: the Weedsport APT's next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the high school board room. We've had quite a few new faces join us this year so far and are always looking for more (especially smiling ones). Why not stop in?
I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving and its accompanying tryptophan-induced nap time (not to mention my sister's cheesecake!) ... bliss. I have so much to be grateful for (OK, grammar fanatics: “for which to be grateful”). It's the perfect time to really stop and think about it all, and know I am truly blessed.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
