Community takes holidays to heart

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving week is already here. We sure had a beautiful autumn, didn't we? We all have so much to thank God for: our lives, our faith, our family and friends, jobs, a roof over our heads, something to eat and clothes to wear.
The Auburn Catholic Community will be celebrating a citywide Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, at St. Alphonsus Church on East Genesee Street. Everyone is asked to bring a donation for the food pantry. Last year, it was held at St. Hyacinth's, and it was just beautiful. All of our local priests celebrated Mass together and the church was packed full; it was such a joyous occasion.

There is also an ecumenical Thanksgiving service being held this week in Auburn. The annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Congregation B'nai Israel, 8 John Smith Ave., Auburn. The service has become a meaningful part of the holiday season for many people. It includes readings, music and reflections from many faith traditions, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Native American and Buddhist. Everyone is asked to bring a canned food item for the local food pantries.

Several other Ecumenical Thanksgiving services are being held this week in many of our local towns: at 2 p.m. Sunday, at First Presbyterian Church in King Ferry and at 6 p.m. Sunday, at Seventh Day Adventist in Union Springs and the homilist will be the Rev. Richard Shatzel.

Ecumenical services will also be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, in both Moravia and Port Byron. Locations for the services are at First Baptist Church of Moravia, 39 Church St., and at Federated Church, Tex Pultz Drive, Port Byron.

Another popular and caring tradition continues this year. The Thanksgiving Day “Home Alone Dinner” will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at St. Hyacinth's Parish Center on Pulaski Street in Auburn. This event is sponsored by Holy Family, St. Francis and St. Hyacinth's churches. Special thanks to Richie and Rosemary Wolter for their caring hearts and for making this happen each year for others. Call Holy Family Church at 252-9576 for more information.

During this giving season, many of our local churches will be collecting turkeys, gift cards and canned goods for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. Very soon, Christmas Giving trees will start to appear in our churches to purchase toys for children or perhaps wish list items for those in nursing homes. When we each do a little bit, so many good things can happen for others.

The following are some other local events over the next week or two:

€ St. Hyacinth Altar Rosary Society is having a bake sale this weekend after the 5 p.m. Mass Saturday and the 11 a.m. Mass Sunday.

€ Pierogis will not be sold at St. Hyacinth's Friday, Nov. 23 or 30. Sales will resume Friday, Dec. 7. Orders will be accepted by phone Thursday, Dec. 6, until noon at 252-9547.

€ Westminster Church will be decorated for Advent to be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. The “greening of the church” is a great evening of adult fellowship, and refreshments will be included.

€ Travel with St. Alphonsus Church to Buffalo Tuesday, Dec. 4, for some Christmas shopping at the Walden Galleria mall followed by a dinner at Salvatore's Italian Gardens. Cost is $65 per person; payment is due by Friday, Nov. 23. Call 252-3078 or 252-7261 for more information.

€ St. Mary's Church in Auburn is hosting two musical events in December: The American Boychoir will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, and Madrigalia, a chamber choir, will perform at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $25 for families. Tickets for both are available by calling the parish office at 252-9545.

€ Congratulations to Dawn Corriveau and everyone who worked so hard to make the Heifer Project and Fair a reality. They exceeded their goal of $5,000 to purchase an ark and have almost $10,000 now to purchase two!

Have a peaceful Thanksgiving week and remember God loves you so much and is with you always.

“To be content with what we possess is the greatest and most secure of riches.”
