Chris Mason accomplished just about everything that he could at the high school level.
Now, he's taken his speed and talent one step further.
Mason became the NJCAA National Champion after finishing first (27:08) in the five-mile run in the Division III championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Long Island on Saturday.
The SUNY Delhi freshman is the first freshman at the school to win the race in 14 years and was names First team All-American.
“He's been just outstanding for us,” Broncos coach Bob Backus said. “He's been our number one runner all season.”
Mason led the Broncos to their fourth-straight national title, and their 10th overall. Winning the individual title though, has just been the latest in a string of accomplishments for him this fall.
He became the regional champ two weeks ago. Before that, all he did was win the conference meet at Mohawk Valley, Suny Delhi's invitational and the Fingerlakes Invitational as well.
In the team's 10 races this season so far, Mason has been the No. 1 runner in nine of them. Backus decided to rest him for one of the meets.
“He's adapted really well to the college scene,” Backus said. “We practice once a week versus every day at the high school level and he's done very well.”
Mason, who is majoring in business administration at the school, will compete next in the NJCAA Half Marathon Classic at Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina on Saturday. It will be Mason's first half marathon.
“He knew when he came in that we had a good history here,” Backus said. “But we're really glad that he decided to come here.”
