A propane explosion hospitalized one man when a tank thought to be empty ignited Thursday morning in Genoa.
An S&V Refinishing employee was refurbishing a commercial-grade propane tank when it exploded. Another man entering the building took the brunt of the blast, according to Genoa Fire Chief Doug LaFave.
Clifford Miller, 56, of Freeville, suffered severe burns to his upper body and was airlifted to University Hospital in Syracuse. He was listed in critical condition.
Raymond Nesbitt, 58, of Moravia, suffered minor facial burns. He was treated at the scene and released.
A dozen trucks from several fire departments and ambulance companies responded to the scene near the corner of Routes 34 and 90 at about 10:16 a.m. The fire that destroyed the wood-frame building was under control by about 11:30 a.m.
New York State Police, the Cayuga County Fire Investigation Team and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the cause.
