AUBURN -- Auburn will have a new mayor.
After a recount and tally of absentee ballots, Michael Quill, with 3,125 votes topped incumbent mayor Timothy Lattimore's 3,033, a 92-vote difference. Independence Party challenger David Dempsey trailed with 757 votes.
Fleming voters also overturned the incumbent town supervisor James E. Young as he lost to Gary B. Searing by 29 votes, 514-485.
Summer Hill, with seven write-in candidates for town supervisor, elected Charles Ripley, who deposed incumbent Kathy Irving by eight votes, 56-48. Remaining candidates with one vote were: Sandra Morehouse, Charles Chawgo, Christopher Ryan, Kathy Chango, and Larry Lorren.
"I think I lost," Mayor Timothy Lattimore said of the results. "I wish him well. Voters have spoken, and there'll be a change in city hall."
Quill predicts he will be as big a presence at city hall as his predecessor. Lattimore conceded to Quill at 2 p.m. at the Board of Elections and later wished him luck during the Auburn City Council meeting later that evening.
"I feel like temporarily there's a weight lifted from my shoulders," Quill said, adding he realizes the relief will be short lived. He will take the seat of mayor at the start of next year.
