I'm writing this column on Monday, Nov. 5, one day before the 2007 election, and I can't help but wonder if this will be one of my last articles as your supervisor.
Ether way I have really enjoyed being Conquest supervisor and writing this column for Lake Life.
We will also have a newly elected town clerk and highway supervisor in 2008.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Cindy Lamphere for her 12 years of service as our town clerk. Cindy has helped me tremendously over my past 10 years. Cindy could have chosen politics when I came in office in 1998 after a heated election. Instead she had the taxpayer's interest at heart. Cindy has helped so many people in our town. I don't want put any undo pressure on anyone coming in, but they will have some pretty big shoes to fill.
We must all be very patient while the new person comes up to speed. The town clerk is the face of Conquest; it is the person every ones sees the most in town government. It is the person you see if you want a marriage license or you want to go hunting, pay your taxes .. the list goes on and on. It's also the person that has to handle people's frustrations when things go wrong.
Many people have told how they will miss Cindy and how much they appreciate what Cindy has done for them. Each one had a little story of the level of service above the call of duty Cindy did for them whether it was coming down to the town hall to sell a hunting license after hours or not charging to notarize a document.
On behalf of the town board and the taxpayers of Conquest - thank you Cindy for everything you have done for us over the years. Thank you for the smile and the friendly service you provided us. And as supervisor, I thank you for a great job you did for me.
And to the new town clerk welcome as the new face of Conquest: We all wish you well for anything you do in the future and if you ever need a job recommendation, just think of all the references you worked for in Conquest.
Editor's note: Knapp was re-elected for Conquest supervisor and the new town clerk is Kelly E. Clark.
Charlie Knapp is supervisor for the town of Conquest.
