Hat trick

Time is precious and at times, you can get all caught up in it.
When Skaneateles competed for the Section III, Class C title on Nov. 3, little did they know that they would learn how precious time is.

The Lakers upset Thousand Islands 348-346 to narrowly earn their third-straight title.

In the 200 medley relay, Brigid Clary, Jackie Thompson, Kate Menapace, and Holly Ross took third (2:08) in the first event. Afterwards, Sarah Sawyer took first in the 200 freestyle (2:10) and Britton Weber broke a Section III record for the 200 individual medley (2:29.71). Kiley Becker placed first in the 50 free style (25.05), breaking her own, year-old, Skaneateles school record (25.63).

Unlike last year's championship though, depth was lacking, but the time was there regardless. Last years team would send four to five girls up to compete in each event.

“I was almost 99.9% sure that we were going to win last year. We had a ton of depth and that contributed big time for us,” Coach Jill King said. “This year our team strength was time, but everybody swam so much better in sectionals than they had all year and it really helped out. We just had a strong day and good seeding that worked in our favor.”

The team was also paying attention, which helped the Lakers win. A few of the Lakers' swimmers noticed that they had scored one of their own events wrong. King went to the scoring table to inform them. When the judges conferred, they realized their mistake and awarded the Lakers a better place, ultimately giving them crucial points.

“The girls were so on top of the score and into the meet that they were able to catch onto that. Who knows what would have happened if they hadn't caught onto that,” King said. “It was the most exciting sectional meet out of all the meets we've been a part of.”

In the 400 free relay, Sawyer (1:00.70), and Menapace (1:00.43) were one arm stroke ahead of Thousand Islands. With the help of Becker (56.00), and Weber (58.00) in the last legs of the relay, the Lakers were able to keep in the race with Thousand Islands.

“Britton is a very solid swimmer,” King said.

The Lakers coach found it difficult to compare her title-winning teams.

“This years team, our strength was time. We were faster in our times this year as to last year. Last year we had more people going up to compete for us in events,” King said.

She admitted that said she knew they had the talent to three-peat but the question was whether or not they would be able to capitalize. King credited their work ethic, and leadership that was displayed by captains Weber and Menapace.

“Their leadership was very contagious during the meet and it just kept getting passed down to girl by girl. Pretty soon I noticed they were a very motivating force for this team,” King said.

Though no one secured a spot for the New York State meet, a fourth straight championship isn't quite outside the realm of possibility.

“We have six graduating girls, and three of them made sectionals. They all will be missed, but we have some young talent coming up next year,” King said. “Winning is also very contagious so who knows who will want to tryout next year for us.”

Make no mistake though - the Lakers have other goals too other then winning sectionals. They would like to send a swimmer to states.

“I think Kiley Becker has a very good shot at the. She is very dedicated and works very hard. If she doesn't do it next year she still will have one more chance and I wouldn't be surprised if she did it then, if not both times,” King said.

The Lakers time is up but to think a four-peat is a long stroke away is just beyond belief. These girls are young and are here to swim for a little while longer. All they need is time.re regardless. Last years team would send four to five girls up to compete in each event.
