HIT: To the Cayuga County Board of Elections for its timely reporting of results on Tuesday night.
A couple of years ago, the board didn't even count some town races the same day votes were cast. Now, the board has complete results for all races available online so voters can find out as soon as possible who the winners were.
Their efforts, the result of much hard work, is a great service to the community.
MISS: To items being stolen from veterans' graves.
State police have received several complaints of missing bronze plaques and flag holders from veterans' graves in cemeteries in Cayuga, Wayne and Seneca counties.
Any crime involving vandalism in a cemetery is bad enough, but taking from a veteran's grave? It's hard to believe someone could actually plan out such a heinous crime. Veterans have made sacrifices to keep our country free.
If anyone is eventually found responsible for these crimes, perhaps justice should fit the crime. We suggest a few visits to a VA hospital as well as a year of clean-up duty at a cemetery.
HIT: To Tom Scherrer, the Skaneateles native, who is back on the PGA Tour. Scherrer, who played high school golf in Skaneateles, shot 18-under-par in the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship last weekend.
The tie for third meant $45,000 for Scherrer and moved him from 27th to 20th on the tour's final money list. Now, he has regained his PGA Tour card, meaning he can tee it up against the world's best and for bigger purses.
Scherrer has been off the PGA Tour for five years and his return shows how hard work can pay off.
MISS: To the closing of Friends, an Auburn bar, for serving an underage customer. One offense along these lines is too many, but this is the third time Friends has temporarily lost its liquor license for serving minors.
Let's hope the message sinks in this time.
