AUBURN - The home opener for the Cayuga Community College women's basketball team looked like it would be a good one for most of the first half against Herkimer Community College on Tuesday.

But after the Generals went on a 5-0 run with 1:32 left to take a two-point lead into intermission, the momentum had clearly changed. Herkimer outscored the Spartans 40-31 in the second half to take the 66-55 win.
Generals sophomore Michelle Johnson got off a 3-point shot to start the game before the Spartans quickly regained the momentum. Tiffany Collinsworth scored eight of her 20 points in the next five minutes as Cayuga went on a 13-4 run to take the lead.
The lead changed hands several more times until the Generals scored five points in the final two minutes to take a 26-24 lead into halftime.
The Generals got scores from six players in the first 20 minutes of the game, while the Spartans had just four, including 14 points from Collinsworth.
Herkimer came out firing in the second half as well, shooting three 3s in the first two minutes, but hitting just one of them. Led by 5-foot- 8 sophomore Ann Schoff, who scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half, the Generals never trailed again.
Union Springs alum Christy Nicandri drained a shot at the 14:38 mark to tie the game at 33, but it was as close as the Spartans would come. Three minutes after the game was knotted, Herkimer went on a 9-0 run to get its biggest lead of the night. Amanda Davey scored six of her 10 points in that two-minute span.
With 2:42 left in the game, the Spartans gave a valiant effort, sinking two 3s - one by Union Springs grad Stephanie Jakaub and the other Auburn native Molly Grinnell - but the Generals hit on 4-of-8 free throws to keep the game just out of reach for the home squad.
Nicandri scored 13 points for Cayuga and for Herkimer, Johnson led the way with 16 points.
Colleen Getman, of Herkimer, put up 10 points, as did Theresa Lazarus.
The Spartans (1-1) host Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Saturday in the first of four straight home games.
The Generals and Spartans next meet in Herkimer on Jan. 6.
