Get ready for the holiday season

We all talk about how busy the holiday season can be and the Red Cross is no exception. The chapter is very excited about partnering with Cosentino's Florist Nov. 28 for our Holiday Gala: An Evening of Hospitality and Holiday Cheer.
During November and December, there will be 15 blood drives around the county hosted by Sacred Heart Church, King Ferry Presbyterian Church, Cayuga Community College or the National Honor Society at Moravia High School and many other sponsors. There will be many opportunities to take a first aid/CPR/AED or Pet First Aid or babysitting course. Some classes are held on consecutive weekday evenings or all day on a Saturday; we try to fit everyone's busy schedule.

Babysitter's Training, one of our most popular classes for the younger set, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1 and then during the holiday vacation on Dec. 26 and, repeated, Dec. 27. Last month, two classes filled up almost immediately, and we trained 43 new babysitters - just in time for holiday parties for smart parents.

This course teaches safe child-care techniques in a fun setting, diapering and baby handling with mannequins, activities to take to a home for a great experience for everyone, interviewing and marketing ideas and instills new babysitter skills which prepare youth for possible calamities and how to avoid them.

The cost for the course is $40 and includes a Red Cross certification, lunch, snacks and many reference handouts. For an additional cost, participants may purchase a babysitter's portfolio or backpack, which include a simple first aid kit.

The Holiday Gala held Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Cosentino's Florist, 141 Dunning Ave., Auburn, is the perfect time to get decorations for your home, be inspired by the demonstrations and, perhaps, even win a wreath or tabletop tree. There will be refreshments by Balloon's, goodie bags for everyone and a 10 percent discount on all purchases. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door; tickets are available at the chapter, The UPS Store at Metcalf Plaza or at Cosentino's. All proceeds benefit the Red Cross.

Each month on the second Tuesday at 5 p.m., The Chapter Disaster and Emergency Services Committee meets at the office. Discussions focus on updates from national, table top exercises, fundraisers, local training events, introduction on how to be a National Disaster volunteer and other emergency services provided by the chapter.

Today, immediately following the regular meeting, there will be an Informational Update on Red Cross AFES or Armed Force Emergency Services. All Red Cross chapters are required to be available 24/7 to serve as the official communication link between service personnel and their families. This means that at 3 p.m. if a local family needs to request the presence of a son or daughter at the funeral of a grandparent who just passed way, they call the Red Cross, which, in turn, verifies all information and begins the routing of that request. Anyone who is interested in learning more about being a Red Cross AFES volunteers should call to register for the free training.

Last, but certainly not least, please remember that during the holiday season, the blood supply level can become dangerously low as people get caught up in the hustle and bustle of preparation. But what better present is there to give but “the gift of life?” A simple donation of your blood can save three lives.

You are invited to give blood from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the First United Methodist Church, 99 South St., Auburn. As a special thank you, you can enjoy pumpkin pie and coffee, shop The Red Cross Store for fabulous gifts - first aid kits or gift certificates for trainings in 2008 - and pick up your tickets for The Holiday Gala.

The last chance in 2007 to give blood in Cayuga County is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 28, at the chapter office, 11 State St. in downtown Auburn. End the year saving a life.

All presenting donors must weigh 110 pounds or more, be age 17 or older, be in good general health and show a photo ID. Please register for an appointment.

For information about donating blood or classes, contact the chapter at 252-9596 or e-mail chapter@ccredcross.org.
