With a PGA Tour card on the line, the Skaneateles native fired a 3-under 68 at the Nationwide Tour Championship Sunday at Barona Creek Golf Club in San Diego to claim a tie for third place. More importantly though, Scherrer vaulted up the tour's money list and claimed a PGA Tour card for the 2008 season.
Scherrer went from 27th to 20th on the money list over the weekend. The top 25 receive automatic Tour cards.
This won't be his first stint on the PGA Tour. Scherrer first qualified for the tour in 1996 and played from 1999 to 2003. His one and only PGA Tour victory came at the 2000 Kemper Open.
But after the win, Scherrer struggled with his game and within three years, was back playing on the Nationwide Tour.
Scherrer was in a similar situation two years ago at the Nationwide Tour Championship. He entered the 2005 event 19th among the money leaders but a poor showing bumped him from the top 20 - in 2005, the top 20 earned Tour cards. He ended up missing the cut by one spot and just $2,680.
After a quiet 2006, Scherrer has stepped up his play this year. On July 22, he won the Price Cutter Charity Championship, firing a final-round 67 to win the tournament by five strokes.
