Mike Bass not qualified to be district attorney

Friday, November 2, 2007 11:18 PM EDT

I have known all of the employees of the district attorney's office for the past 12 years, as my mother has worked there since 1995. I even know Mike Bass, whom I met several times during his employment of 18 months as an assistant district attorney, plus whatever time he spent as a law clerk. Each and every individual in that office has treated me with the utmost respect. I am ashamed of the continued bashing that is going on in our community against Mr. Vargason and Mr. Budelmann.
Now that I am a senior graduating with a degree in criminal justice and psychology, I have a much better understanding of the law and the responsibilities of the law enforcement agencies.

First and foremost, you must be a strong individual for all the heinous crimes that you deal with on a daily basis. Your strength must include commitment, passion and the ability to fight for the justice of all individuals. Law enforcement officers and the DA's office must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that an individual is guilty of committing that crime. But keep in mind there are many victims involved in this process not only the abused, violated victim, but the families and friends of both the victim and the defendant. An easy job? Absolutely not! A job to take lightly? No!

It wasn't until I watched the debate that I decided to forward this letter. I am appalled at the antics Mike Bass is trying to use. Our system is not flawless. There will be wins, there will be losses. Crimes will be solved and unfortunately some crimes will not. It is reality. Mike Bass shows no compassion, little knowledge and very little understanding of the law. Should we be impressed that he won two cases in four years? I should say not. His unwarranted facial expressions were nothing more than a mockery to the people in our community.

" Although this editorial doesn't rank as number one, it's pretty darn close to the worst drivel I've read in a long time. Here we have a "senior graduating with a degree in criminal justice and psychology" telling a man who has passed the bar exam with many, many years of experience that he has "little knowledge and understanding" of the law. Sheesh Stacey, it's a good thing you didn't decide to become a doctor. Imagine going through your internship and residency. I'm certain the patients under your teaching physician's care would believe that you were smarter than he/she was. Your editorial is simply bird-cage lining. "
