State should do tests to weed out teachers that abuse

Friday, November 2, 2007 10:24 AM EDT

I am pleased to see the public is being made aware of the increase of incidents of sexual abuse by teachers and other school employees. I realize it is an issue many do not care to consider, yet as you can see it is a reality.
All of my teachers were excellent role models, except for one each, male and female.

Just the thought of an 8-year-old being at risk in this manner, at school is very appalling.

Anyone who takes advantage of the paid position of trust with our children, is just as much a predator as any other sex offender.

The sentence of six months in jail for having a sexual relationship with a student for three years is a shame. The loss of one's teaching certificate is minimal as compared to the many years of emotional turmoil that will be suffered by the victims of such crime. Many long-term mental illnesses occur due to the trauma of sexual abuse.

Perhaps the state education department should check into a more comprehensive psychological test for present and future teachers, with school districts following suit for other school employees.

While discussing a similar matter with a friend of mine who is a priest, I feel his statement is what I'd like to finish with. “This lack of control is the difference between man and beast!”
