Quilts have been a vessel to pass on history through generations, keep the sick warm through bouts of illness and use up scraps of fabrics.
For the 26th year, the Schweinfurth Art Center will show another use for the clothes canvases, art. The annual “Quilts=Art=Quilts” show will open this weekend.

The exhibition will include 90 contemporary quilts by 81 artists from around the nation, Canada, Japan and Ireland. For a list of participating artists and where they are from, visit www.schweinfurthartcenter.org.

The juries selected these works from 330 submissions by 194 artists.

New this year is a preview reception, which will take place the evening before the display officially opens. The evening will give the artists and community members a chance not only to mingle and discuss the art form that brought them together, but also get an early glance at the exhibit, assistant director Stephanie Schuster said.

Organizers will give out six to 10 prizes Saturday night. The show will have prizes for a range categories, such as best in show, best traditional design, innovative design or innovated use of traditional designs.

While unpacking, Schuster saw this year a lot of quilts are larger.

“That's a shift, for a while they were smaller. Now, there seems to be a fair amount of larger quilts,” she said.

People have sent their work from 33 states, with New York as the state with the most submissions - 15. However, this year's exhibit will receive a boost from the West Coast region, including people from California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada.

“I think that people relate to quilts more readily,” Schuster said. The fabric and medium are things many people see and use every day.

The exhibit will run until Jan. 6.

Meanwhile, next door at the Cayuga Museum, organizers have put together a related exhibit of Marcellus artist Holly Knott's quilts and paintings.

While the museums are not related, the Cayuga Museum likes to offer a complementary display but with a different spin on the fabric medium, its neighboring art center annual attraction the “Quilts=Art=Quilts” but with a different spin, curator Carrie Barrett said.

The museum will look for artists who focus on one subject, such as Knott's landscapes, or antiques quilts.

Knott will exhibit 27 quilts and nine paintings through the end of December for her show “Expressions in Fabric and Painting: quilts and paintings by Holly Knott.”

The museum also will have an opening reception Sunday. Patrons will have the opportunity to meet with the artist during the reception and learn about her technique, Schuster said.

“(Knott) principally works in capturing landscapes, natural landscapes or some architectural landscapes, and incorporating that in fabric work,” Schuster said.
