Mason ignores tough questions for Quill

Saturday, October 27, 2007 11:32 PM EDT

Chuck Mason's recent personal attack against Mayor Tim Lattimore in The Citizen is a prime example of why people don't go into politics. It shows that Mike Quill, his candidate, is so lacking in substance that he believes the only way he can win is to resort to negative attacks.
If you recall, Mr. Mason ran for mayor four years ago and received only 21 percent of the vote. I think that voters, except for Mr. Quill, have soundly rejected him and his brand of dirty politics. However, I agree that Auburn voters deserve to have important questions answered by their candidates.

Mike Quill has made his record as fire chief the centerpiece of his mayoral campaign. Mr. Quill, please answer the following questions about that record:

€ When you became chief and received a substantial raise over your predecessors, why did you make yourself an “administrative chief” and no longer part of the staff minimum?

€ How much did hiring another assistant chief to take your place on the line cost the city over 11 years?

€ Why did firefighters no longer perform code enforcement after you became chief?

€ Why couldn't fire hydrants be painted rather than spending $90,000 for hydrant caps? Painting would have been less expensive and would be just as effective.

€ Why did you lobby for a $325,000 foam truck that you couldn't use?

€ Why was the current fire department contract a sound recommendation from you, knowing that four new firefighters would tremendously exceed your budget?

Mr. Quill, we voters deserve to hear something from you for once instead of letting your subordinates sling mud for you.

Michael Vasco

" Sheesh Zap.....you appear to have a strange sense of reality. How does asking legitimate questions to a candidate for mayor imply "going against them"? Furthermore, it's interesting that you bring up Mr. Colavito's name. Isn't he the gentleman who provided the misinformation regarding the supposed $10,000.00 stove at the fire department? I wouldn't think he'd be considered "credible" by any stretch of the imagination. If you're concerned that Mr. Quill won't answer those questions before the election due to the short time frame, perhaps you should post the same questions on his website. I noticed he always responds to those in a very professional and timely manner. Toodles!! "

" Yikes you prove the point of the letter. Quill's claim to fame is his record as fire chief. That's fine, but like Lattimore & Dempsey's, his decisions and policies are open to examination. There's nothing personal about Mr. Vasco's letter. Quill is trying to be the stealth candidate - say nothing, let others sling mud, and hopefully he'll cruise in under the radar and not reveal his true intentions, which are whatever Lacey and Mason want him to do. Then when he's given legitimate questions, we get 'personal attacks' and that the fire department is somehow being denigrated. Mr. Vasco is also a retired firefighter and if we are to respect the opinions of firefighters then his counts to, not just the ones who we agree with. "

" Mason and Quill will ignore these questions. It's too close to the election. Mason continues to come up short when it comes to understanding issues. He is nothing more than a political mouth piece for Lacey. Interesting isn't it that there is a fire fighter willing to go against Quill? For months it has been presumed Colavito was the only FF against Quill. I guess there are more than he would like you to know. Answer these questions Quill. Man up! "

" Oh boy - here we go again. Yet another writer having difficulty understanding the difference between legitimate questions and personal attacks. Perhaps I can help clear this up for you. Mr. Mason's editorials asked legitimate questions of our elected officials. There was simply nothing "personal" about them nor were "attacks" made. In fact, they were much like the questions you asked Mr. Quill in your editorial above. Would you consider those questions to be personal attacks? I certainly wouldn't and I'd bet he'd have no problem answering them. "

" Finally, we have a fire fighter willing to speak the truth against Mike Quill. Mike Quill is the last person this community needs in public office. He, and his policies, have cost this city dearly. No more city employees in public office. We cannot afford the double dipping big spenders "
