Two Cents

Only a veteran who fought in the war knows how good people have it in America.
Our American Emperor George Bush is fiddling while half the country burns. One can only hope the same fate befalls him as it did his mentor, Nero.

Five million dollars in ads to tell you not to smoke in cars with children, but let a pedophile live next door to them. Who is being protected, the children or the insurance companies?

Why would anyone want to manage the New York Yankees? It's a thankless job, but I suppose the money is good.

Thanks to our great Cato Town Board, Fire District No. 1 residents just got a cost increase in fire coverage with the benefits of poorer response times, no emergency medical response and higher homeowners insurance. Sure hope everyone remembers these facts when they go to the poles on Nov. 6, and vote for change.

To all of those who thought Spitzer was going to be the answer to all of our state's problems, what do you think now? Illegal immigrants should be deported, not blessed with legal documents.

Pretty bad when a judge denies a request to attend a funeral service, being a weekend inmate in the jail.

" Interesting Brew....on one hand, you want a smoke-free environment for the kids and yourself, on the other hand, you don't care if people smoke. What are you advocating? I just did some quick math based on tobacco tax in the state of California, Kansas and NJ and it appears that if you averaged it out over and above the federal tax, you're looking at about 100 billion dollars in taxes combined. From this point on, I'll refer to you as "Mr. Giggly Britches" as you obviously can't find a happy medium between the two. "

" You're not being "sensible"--if they did outlaw tobacco-the groupies would still find another reason for lung cancers--such as emmisions from vehicles and lead based toys! Health care will never lower as long as there is a need for ANY kind of medical tests, doctors and medicines! Only a fool would believe such a story. "

" Sensible......You're absolutely correct that the numbers of heart and circulatory diseases will decrease in the years to come if they outlaw tobacco TODAY. However, if you honestly believe that your rates are going to decrease significantly as a result, you're simply not being realistic. The federal government receives approximately 5.8 billion dollars annually on tobacco tax and that doesn't include what each state collects over and above that figure. It's simply time to pull out your wallets if you want a smoke-free environment. "

" Are you suggesting that the government tax you a set amount then let you pick like a restaurant menu where you want your taxes to go? Have you lost your mind? "

" I have never advocated the banning of tobacco use or sale. I just find it highly offensive to have to inhale second hand smoke. Smoke your brains out but do it away from others who do not wish to inhale your smoke or young ones who can't make that decision. There should be a doubling of the tax on tobacco products with all money going to health care and survivors of tobacco related disease. You should be taxed but the proceeds should go to help your families and lighten the burden on the health care system. So stop going to crazy tangents about things I did not say. "

" Yikes... Outlaw tobacco and the tax money will go away. However, Medicare/Medicade tax burden will less because the rates of numerous cancers, respiratory , heart and circulatory diseases will decrease significantly. Personal insurance rates and life insurance costs would be reduced as well. "

" Sheesh Brew.....perhaps the federal government should make the sale of tobacco illegal in the US. That would definitely solve the problem as you'll never again have to worry about the dangers of second-hand smoke. Of course, the lost revenue from tobacco sales would need to be made up somewhere. I'm certain you wouldn't mind if they taxed your future social security and pension checks at a rate of 4 times what it is today to make up the difference. Heck, you appear to be a nice enough guy. I bet you wouldn't even mind if they taxed your internet usage and/or imposed a "nominal" fee of 25 cents for every e-mail you send or reply to. And, I just know you'll get that giddy feeling deep down inside when they tax your medication at an additional $4.00 per prescription to help fund health care for all children. You're a great American Brew which is why I think you should lead the charge from behind your computer screen. "
