Matt Hoey had another outstanding performance for the Auburn football team, while another senior had a career game in the Maroons 22-14 win over Henninger in a crossover game on Wednesday.
With the win, the Maroons (5-4) complete back-to-back winning seasons for the first time under head coach Dave Moskov.
Auburn, bounced out of the Section III, Class AA playoff picture five days prior to the crossover game, played with all the character and heart that earned them a state title nearly a year ago.
“I'm very proud of this team,” Moskov said. “It was really tough coming off the loss to Liverpool Friday night, but these guys responded well. It could have been ugly, but these guys were all class.”
All Hoey did was catch a 21-yard touchdown pass from Chris Gomez in the first quarter, rush for another in the fourth (54 yards), catch a two-point conversion and kick two extra points.
The senior co-captain also racked up nine tackles and had one of three sacks on the night for the Maroons.
“This was another monster game for him,” Moskov said.
Senior Anthony Adams, who missed some time early in the season with an injury to his right arm, had the best game of his varsity career by recording four catches for 28 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter.
Matt Wild caught four passes from Gomez for 66 yards. The senior quarterback also bounced back from a tough playoff performance to throw for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
The Maroons didn't turn the ball over once.
Junior Mike Miskell led the defense with 14 tackles. Syracuse University-bound Nick Lepak tallied 11, including a sack.
Wild recorded eight tackles and Ryan Button earned another sack.
