A man was arrested Monday after police say he intentionally damaged three live trees on city property.
According to the Auburn Police Department, James A. Weisbrod, 29, of 138 Franklin St., used a chain saw to cut lines into the trunks, a process known as girdling that eventually kills the trees.

The trees were located between the sidewalk and the curb near the corner of Franklin and Perry streets, police said.

Weisbrod was charged with the felony of second-degree criminal mischief.

The trees will have to be cut down, which officials estimate will cost $2,750, which does not include replacement costs.

According to the police report, when authorities asked Weisbrod why he was damaging the trees, he said he just wanted them to stop growing.

" Does this make any sense to anybody else? He wanted them to stop growing? There is something very wrong with this person to have done this. I hope the city charges him and COLLECTS the money owed for these trees and their replacement. He should also be banned from owning a chain saw too. Scary man. "
