Bill could reduce commercial truck traffic

A piece of state Senate truck traffic legislation could reduce commercial traffic on local roads if approved.
The bill would require the state Department of Transportation to supervise and coordinate specified routes for commercial trucks hauling hazardous materials, including municipal and solid waste.

Currently there are no restrictions outside of New York City.

“Truck traffic is overwhelming our local towns and villages in the Finger Lakes region,” sponsoring state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, said in a press release. “Our local roads were not constructed to withstand the current amount of truck traffic and this legislation will keep more of these trucks on the Thruway, where they belong.”

In addition to establishing rules, procedures and standards for the DOT to follow, the law would also require the department to confer with its health and environmental conservation counterparts when designating truck routes.

As of late, the topic of truck traffic has been a hot one for Cayuga County municipalities, many of which have representatives on the Upstate New York Safety Coalition Task Force.

The task force plans to meet with various elected officials at the Aurora Inn at 6 p.m. Thursday.

" Why doesn't Senate just put up a sign on all the road into their township that says: "KEEP OUT!!!" That's where they are heading. They could also put a wall around the whole township so the rest of the world wouldn't have look at them either. So much intolerance and hate...it stops with you!!! "
