Please don't build a pig farm, I love to play outside

Tuesday, October 23, 2007 10:00 AM EDT

Hi, my name is Aaron Ward. I live on Denman Road in Montezuma. I like to spend my time outside. I skateboard, play basketball, jump on my trampoline, ride my bike, play baseball, and take hikes with my Grandpa.
I know people are talking about a pig farm being built down the road from my house. I think that if that goes on too long, I could not go outside anymore.

Everywhere you go on my street you might see a sign that says “no factory farms.” I want the environment good and healthy for my dog, Jake, because my dog is outside all of the time.

Also, because of my brother Bryson. Usually my brother loves to play outside as much as me, so it has to be healthy for him, too.

" First, Aaron is a boy's name. Second, he'ssmarter than you are Dan W. Odors aren't the problem. Aaron's HEALTH is at stake. There was a young man in Pennsylvania who DIED from exposure to waste spread on farm fields. There was a Mennonite family in Virginia, I believe it was, who all died from breathing the fumes from their liquid manure pond. My boyfriend's mother was made very sick drinking the water from her well because it had e-coli in it from overspreading of manure on adjacent farm fields. There have been bogs of hog manure in North Carolina which exploded from the build up of methane. Factory farming is just an dangerous to our health and environment as a factory with a smokestack or a chemical plant. Aaron is clever enough to realize it isn't just the smell, but a threat to his health, and that of his pet as well -- which means it is also a threat to the health of wildlife in the area, and to water quality, to air quality, etc. The odor is merely a marker of something much more dangerous than just a smell. "

" Sorry Aaron, you live in the country. There is odors with living in the country. Ask Mom and Dad to move to the city. Where there is no farming going on. You are a smart young lady to ask your questions. "
