Mayor Lattimore owes explanation for his actions

Tuesday, October 23, 2007 10:00 AM EDT

Over the last couple years many older people in Auburn have mentioned to me that they voted for Tim Lattimore four years ago hoping he could do for our city what his father had done. Those same people now tell me that Tim is nothing like his father was, and that his behavior has been disappointing to say the least.
As the final days before the election arrive here are some questions that the voters of Auburn should be looking to have answered from the incumbent Mayor Tim Lattimore.

1. Do you believe that the “Brawl at City Hall” was one of Auburn's darkest moments, and would you behave in such a manner again?

2. Why did you vote to provide a $3,000 severance package to your former secretary?

3. Why was your former secretary potentially going to sue the city?

4. How much money have the taxpayers of Auburn spent paying for your personal cell phone over the last four years?

5. Why are you not willing to make your taxpayer-funded cell phone bills public information?

An explanation for the above questions from Mayor Lattimore is long overdue. If he is not willing to provide such an explanation then he should certainly provide an apology.

Chuck Mason

" Yikes doesnt support accountability, he supports Mason and nothing else matters. If OMG's post is a prime example of what is wrong with Auburn's politics, then Yikes post is right up there as well. Dempsey is the right choice for Mayor, he owes no allegiance to the Dems and he owes no allegiance to the Republicans. He would give balance to City Hall. Dempsey would not be another mouth piece of the political machine. This is something Mason never learned. Mason does what he is told when he is told to do it. Lattimore and Quill are no different. "

" If OMG's post doesn't S-P-E-L-L out a need for change at City Hall, nothing will. It looks more like a well-scripted storyline for a soap-opera rather than a professionally run city government. It's time to bring accountability, credibility and integrity back to Auburn. "

" Sheesh Zapped - thanks for the compliment. I don't defend anyone for the sake of defending them. I defend Mr. Mason because he's being honest in his statements and asking legitimate questions of the incumbents. Is there anything wrong with holding our elected officials accountable for their actions? If your answer is yes, perhaps you should go back to kindergarten and learn the basics all over again. Toodles!!! "

" Little Chuckie: I believe the "Brawl at City Hall" was actually an enlightening moment. Mayor Lattimore loves sunshine-not the black, backroom politics that were going on at that time. He suffered stitches & a thrashing in his effort to prevent hush money being paid to cover up Councilor Dempsey's activities of indiscretion. Mayor Lattimore signed the $3,000 severance package when his former secretary left the city's employ because City Council approved it. He was outnumbered when John Salomone & Tom Leone drew this "severance package" up in an effort to hush up what was going on.Mayor Lattimore's secretary was very likely going to sue the city for sexual harrassment. Mayor Lattimore was the last to know about this sordid mess & Dempsey wanted to be sure she remained "confidential" about his activities. The "good old boys" did everything they could to help him. Chuckie, you would like to have the public believe the taxpayers are paying the bill for Mayor Lattimore's personal cell phone usage. You play small, dirty politics. Truth is, when Tim came into office, Salomone had a policy in place where the city paid the full amount of city official's cell phone bills. It was Mayor Lattimore who changed this policy so that only a portion of official's cell phone bills get paid by the taxpayers. It was Mayor Lattimore who instituted this cost saving measure. And yes, it would be exactly what Bob Hunter & Katie Lacey & little Chuckie Mason would like to have Tim do by making his cell phone records public info.Mayor Lattimore was working with a prospective developer day in & day out in an effort to entice him to conduct his business in Auburn when it was reported to him by the developer that he had been contacted by a city official telling him not to deal with the mayor! This city official had obtained info with Tim's contact numbers on it & attempted to sabotage the city from his elected office!Instead of putting efforts forward to work on even one productive project for Auburn, the "good old boys" were constantly trying to slow Tim down with their games....block Tim from having a secretary, block the secretary from being full time, don't let Tim have a cell phone & then stir up suspicion about his cell phone usage. These are the reasons you & your cohorts were voted out of office Chuckie. Mason & Hunter & Katie Lacey are all naysayers & obstructionists to any progress being made in this city.Mayor Lattimore has been endorsed by the CSEA, The Police Officers Union, the Correction Offficers, the Republican & the Conservative parties and even Greg Rigby, his former opponent supports his bid for re-election.Tim has raised the bar of consciousness in Auburn. His signs are posted all around orange construction fences illustrating the improvements he is working to bring forth.Dempsey wanted an out of town construction firm to do downtown & Tim was able to get a local contractor in saving the taxpayers 1.4 million dollars. When the county manager did not want to extend water & sewer rights to Aurelius for the strip mall, Mayor Lattimore was responsible for getting it thru for them as he realized the benefits the mall would give our entire region. Answer to that Democrats & explain your sabotaging antics because you owe the taxpayers of the city of Auburn a huge apology! "

" You can always depend on Mr Yikes to defend Mason. Through thick and thin Yikes will justify the unjustifyable in order to make Mason and his lacky crew look credible. Face it Mr Yikes, Mason is nothing but a mouth piece for Kate Lacey. He is doing this because she told him to do it. Mason cannot act on his own accord, nor does his have the back bone to stand on his own feet. In fact if he was as wonderful as you would like us to believe, why didnt the school board want him back? They couldn't wait to get rid of him. "

" What a sorry piece of crap Chuck has prove to be. He has abused the authority local Dems gave him and lost a few good friends in the process. Again, he continues to come up SHORT in his criticms of others. "

" I'm confused after reading some of the comments below. I've yet to see in any of Mr. Mason's editorials where he has "slammed" anyone. People obviously have legitimate questions and concerns regarding the incumbents. Personally, I can't think of a better venue than the one Mr. Mason has chosen to ask these questions. Auburn's electorate have a right to know the answers before heading to the polls. As I stated yesterday, I commend Mr. Dempsey for explaining his record even though I didn't buy it. I hope Mr. Lattimore can extend the citizens of Auburn that same courtesy. "

Duck Commander wrote on Oct 23, 2007 4:47 PM:

" Ok Chuck, so you slammed Dempsey, you slammed Lattimore. In tomorrows letters to the editor do the following: Ask Quill to answer some questions or better yet since you seem to be the LITTLE dog at his side-give the people of Auburn his record and his vision. Does he not have the ability to speak for himself? or do you have him so wrapped up that he is afraid. Quill must be truly "short" sighted to let you do all the talking for him--Definitely not what Auburn needs. "

" Auburn will NEVER change. They spend and just figure people will pay. If you cut city employees or teachers, you will not get reelected. Everybody in Auburn has a relative or neighbor as an employee of the city or school system. Are they going to complain about what's going on? "

" I am no fan of Tim Lattimore, but this kind of petty criticism is ridiculous. The secretary incident is long over and the matter has been settled. Why should the Mayor have to make his cell phone bills public, does any other city employee who has a city-paid phone have to make his/her bills public? Mason is a failed politician, a man who could not get elected himself and so turns his attention to heckling the real candidates. "

" Listen here people of Auburn, every time Mayor Lattimore tries to improve this city or create jobs(the Casino) he is met with closed minded old folks who don't want any change. These same people think things will get better in a city that is dying if we just sit around complaining. We need bigger and better things in this area and Mr. Lattimore deserves more credit than he is given. At least he tries and that is more than the last few mayors that Auburn has had!! "

" Isn't just like Mason to continue to drag the name of a good family through the mud like Lattimore. The secretary was a grown adult just like you Chuckie, only taller. These people have paid dearly for their transgressions, both in the papers and in their family. Leave this woman alone and go after the politician. Go after his political record, with that in mind lets discuss your record Chuckie, what did you do when you were in council? Nothing! You accomplished nothing and the people in Auburn knew they made a grave mistake SHORTLY after you were elected. Or tell us what you were able to accomplish when you were on the board of education. Nothing. In fact even the board refused to re appoint you to fill a vacancy. David Dempsey will get my vote, because of people like you that love to slng mud. Lattimore Lacey, Hunter, Carnacelli, you are all cut from the same peice of cloth. You are al pathetic and are the reason auburn is in the mess it is today. Quill is nothing but another puppet of the good ole boy system. He was the last choice for the Dems and he is the last person anyone should consider for Mayor. "

" I'm not a Lattimore fan, but I believe Chuck is missing the bigger picture. The least thing the tax payers have to worry about is how much his phone bill is, and who he is talking to. I'm thinking; jobs he promised, accountability, fiscal discipline, to name just a few. Least of my worries is how many minutes he spent talking with family and friends on a cell phone. "
