An Auburn woman is suing Cayuga County for injuries she says her son sustained at a county park.
Sandra Edwards filed suit last week against the county and the Parks and Trails Commission, claiming that both entities failed to leave a public trail in a reasonable and safe condition.

According to the complaint, Edwards and her son were walking on the Auburn-Fleming Trail on May 5 when her son fell and suffered severe personal injuries. Edwards is demanding a judgment of an unspecified amount from the county because of what the lawsuit claims as “negligence and carelessness” on the part of the county towards maintaining the public trail.

The Auburn-Fleming Trail is a 1.6-mile scenic stretch connecting Route 34 in the town of Fleming and Dunning Avenue in Auburn.

The trail allows people to traverse wetlands, woodlands and farmland on bike or on foot.

According to county attorney Fred Westphal, the claim will be referred to the county's insurance carrier, who will assign an attorney to the case.

“We'll wait to see what happens from there,” Westphal said.

" I wouldn't be so quick to judge until all the facts are heard. Do any of you know all the details? I certainly didn't learn anything from this story except a lawsuit was filed for negligence. It'll be up to the court to decide if the case has any merit. "

" More money grabbing by lawyers etc. I have a scar on my foot from being injured 35 years ago. It was part of growing up. Looking for easy money. When the trails are closed. Its from the money grubbers looking to sue the county "

" Another one of Auburn's finest trying to capitalize on their child's injury... which was a direct result to poor supervision and poor choices of places to take a 5 year old! A wooded area isn't exactly a place you want to allow your child to run free. There is a reason my parents held my hand as a child... maybe this mother should have kept a better eye on her child. Your child was injured due to parental negligance not the city. Stop looking for a free ride in life and be accountable for your own actions! "

" Another example of what's wrong with society. Lets blame someone else for pathetic parenting skills. You want to know why are county taxes and insurance rates are so high. Look at the inordinate amount of TV ads for personal injury attorneys. The question is,would she be suing if the child got her on one of her siblings property? "

" In a park,on a trail, even in your own yard YOU need to supervise your kids. Dont blame the county!!!!!!! "
