Benefit to be held for U. Springs family
A group of Union Springs seventh graders and their families are organizing a benefit for a local family who lost their home in a fire.

Nearly 20 children and their parents planned a pasta dinner which will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Union Springs Fire Department Hall on Route 90. The $10 event includes a dinner, auction raffle prizes and music. Proceeds from the event will go to the Burnett family - Todd and Dawn, and their children Danielle, Tyler and TJ - whose house was destroyed by a fire on Sept. 19.

Auction items include a New York Jets autographed football and items from Bass Pro Shop. Tickets for the dinner are available at Cervo's News and Westside Auto in Auburn, and Jason's New York Pizzeria in Union Springs.

Contributions and donations can be made to “Benefit for the Burnett Family” c/o Debbie Knuppenburg, 12 Oak Drive, Union Springs, NY 13160.

Schumer trying to close dairy loophole

U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer asked the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry to fix a loophole which has allowed foreign companies to avoid contributing to the Dairy Promotion Program, but they can benefit from the program.

The proposed change would require every domestic or international milk producer that does business in the country would have to contribute money to the marketing campaign.

Last year, dairy farmers around the nation contributed $270 million to promote their products. They have to pay 15 cents per milk unit, or cwt. A Cornell University-sponsored study suggests the promotional program increases the product's value, something all dairy producers benefit from.
