Already working dream job in a great location
Each Monday, The Citizen features someone from the Finger Lakes community.

This week, we spotlight Henry MacDonald.

Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A. Really helping people reach a goal that's important to them, teaching people.

Q. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

A. Teaching people and the fact that the information is the same for everyone. But whether they're 10 years old at the young end of the spectrum of 70 years old, they all have different perspectives on life, so it's different at every level. It's almost like speaking a foreign language.

Q. What would be your dream job, and in what part of the world would you be working?

A. I got it, and I'm there. The advantage here is I absolutely love central New York and what it has to offer and in terms of climate. It offers some of the best freshwater diving in the world. And we can take people to scuba dive in exotic destinations all over the world and come back to the four seasons here.

Q. What's the best way to relax after a tough day?

A. Spending time with my family and eating a good meal.

Q. What do you like most about living and/or working in the Finger Lakes region?

A. I think the awesome beauty and the magnificent history of the area lends itself to being a really great place to live.

Q. If you had the choice of meeting any three people in the world who would they be, and why?

A. Ghandi, for his position and his commitment to peace in the world, so I could gain that same level of commitment about my own life. John F. Kennedy, he was the only president of my time who was assassinated and there was such an aura about him, I'd really like to know how he felt about how people felt about him. And the pope, as the world leader of the Catholic religion, there are a few things I'd like to discuss with him.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

A. Retired and traveling the world with my wife, Joan.

Q. What would people who think they know you be most surprised to find out about you?

A. That I'm not as tough as they think I am.

Q. If you were mayor or supervisor of your town/city, what#,s the first thing you'd change?

A. One person can't change anything by himself, he can only effect change by bringing people on board. That said, my goal would be to do a better job of creating greater resources for economic development, by focusing on smaller businesses.

Q. If you were to win the lottery tomorrow, what#,s the first thing you'd do?

A. I would ensure the financial security of my family, including my children and grandchildren, then see how I could put the money toward promoting and enhancing the quality of life of people in the community.
